The Karatsu technique is believed to have originated in Korea.
Karatsu ware is made from a clay with a high iron content. Images of flowers, plants, birds or mythological creatures may be be painted onto the pots using an iron-based underglaze. The work is then fired with a semi-transparent grey glaze which allows the underglaze to show.
